A man from Urk was arrested on Sunday for threatening mayor Cees van den Bos of the same place via social media. After new fireworks riots in Urk, in the night from Saturday to Sunday, thirteen other men were also arrested.
The mayor reported the threat, after which the police consulted the Public Prosecution Service and arrested the suspect.
According to the police, most of the men arrested in connection with riots during the weekend are around 20 years old. One of them is 40 years old.
Police arrested them on charges of arson, throwing heavy fireworks, attempted aggravated assault, threats and disregard of the emergency warrant.
Mayor Van den Bos issued that emergency order late on Saturday evening, when it became restless again around the Wilhelminapark in his municipality. The Mobile Unit had to be involved to restore peace.
Two officers have also reported it, according to the police. The riot police and the police were pelted with stones, bottles and heavy fireworks and violent verbal abuse.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) informed NU.nl on Monday that the man suspected of threatening the mayor is still in prison and will be brought to trial on Tuesday. Two others, suspected of assault, were also detained on Monday afternoon.
Troubled weeks in Urk
Urk has been restless at weekends for weeks. Several dozen arrests have already been made. Ten rioters received a behavioral order for two weekends on Friday, which means that they have to stay home on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Van den Bos also imposed a ban on gathering together and designated the area around the Wilhelminapark as a safety risk area. The police may carry out preventive searches in such an area.
According to the municipality and the police, it went well last weekend for a very long time, until the flame hit the pan shortly before midnight on Saturday evening. On Sunday it remained quiet.
