jpnn.com, BISSAU – Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo held a cabinet reshuffle amid the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic on Sunday (28/6). No half-hearted, he removed five ministers at once, including the interior minister and the minister of defense.

Embalo did not reveal the reasons for the dismissal of the ministers, who were all members of Embalo’s MADEM-15 party or parties loyal to the president.

The move has exacerbated political uncertainty in the small West African country, where Embalo was declared the winner of the presidential election last December and Domingos Simoes Pereira of the PAIGC party came second.

“That is Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s strategy to get a majority in parliament,” said the pro-PAIGC website Ditadura de Consenso through online analysis following the decree.

The dismissal of a number of presidential aides came before the parliamentary session, when members of the council are expected to debate about which political alliance has the right to govern the country.

Post-election turmoil harbored hopes that the elections would end years of institutional turmoil.

Former president Jose Mario Vaz unloaded seven prime ministers in five years amid a conflict with the PAIGC, which controls most seats in parliament. (ant / dil / jpnn)
