/ world today news/ On the page of the “Heritage of Empires” website, the retired Russian general Leonid Reshetnikov, famous in Bulgaria, published a greeting for May 24, in which he emphasized the civilizational role of Bulgaria in the spread and development of the work of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius. From Pogled Info we publish his opinion. The editors reserve the right to disagree with everything expressed in the text:
The creation of writing is an epochal event. It is not by chance that in many Slavic countries the Day in memory of Saints Cyril and Methodius, creators of Slavic writing, is celebrated not so much as a church holiday, but also as a state holiday.
In pre-revolutionary Russia, this holiday was widely celebrated, and after 1917 it was ordered to be forgotten, but after 1991 it returned to our lives again.
For seventy years of theocratic power in our people, the understanding of the main meaning of the work of the holy brothers has been lost: thanks to the Slavic script created by them, which was recognized as canonical by both Constantinople and Rome, the Slavs were able to join Christ’s faith and to perceive God’s Word in their own language.
Alas, even the literate today, brought up in Soviet textbooks with righteous indignation, ask:
“What, were the Russian people before Cyril and Methodius silent as a fish and did not know any written language?”
Of course, they were not silent and understood the writing.
As the Brave Blackbeard wrote in the 10th century in his “About the Letters”:
“They tried to write Slavic speech with Greek letters without distribution. But how can you write God well in Greek?”
It was this “disorder” that was overcome thanks to the Slavic alphabet, which became the basis of all Slavic languages.
The historical merit in the development and spread of the cause of the “Slavic First Teachers” belongs to Bulgaria. It is here, in the Bulgarian monasteries, educational centers and schools, that a whole galaxy of writers and translators developed their activities, who not only translated the most important monuments of liturgical, canonical and patristic literature from Greek, but also created vivid examples of original literary works.
The contribution of the Bulgarian clergy to the Christianization of the Russian people and the establishment of the Russian Church was well known in pre-revolutionary Russia.
So, the hero of the War of Independence of 1877-1878, Count Ignatiev, in his letter from the front on July 10, 1877, wrote to his wife:
„We return our debt to the homeland of the enlighteners Cyril and Methodius”.
Today, because of the political conjuncture, our Cyrillic alphabet is under attack, there are repeated attempts to replace it with the Latin alphabet. Bulgarians start talking to Russians in English, and our “educated people” accuse the Bulgarians of wanting to “steal the Cyrillic alphabet from the Russians”. Let us preserve our wealth – our language, in it are the wisdom and covenants of our ancestors, the guarantee of our future.
