Until now, archaeological remains say that many victims of the Black Death were buried en masse.

Apparently, a team of experts just discovered evidence showing that not all the victims of the Black Death were buried in mass grave.

In fact, some of the victims were buried in their own graves with great care.

The team of experts sampled nearly 200 graves and detected DNA from ancient Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes the plague, in the teeth of several people who died from the disease and were buried alone.

“This research improves understanding that even in these traumatic times, they go to great lengths to bury victims with care,” said Craig Cessford, an archaeologist from the University of Cambridge.

Reported from Science Alert, Tuesday (22/6/2021), this finding adds new information to the history of the plague that took place during the 14th century.

Today, the outbreak is still appearing in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, and Peru.

Mass burials were carried out for fear that the disease would spread within a few days.

The victims were buried in “plague pits”, such as those dug in a 14th-century monastery in northwest England.

It contained 48 skeletons and more than half of them were children.

What is most striking about the way the victims of this plague are buried is the effort that must be made to bury the victims, within the walls of buildings commonly used for gatherings of religious communities.
