Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Research in South Africa shows that a vaccine made by US pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) can provide high protection against coronavirus infection.
Joint lead researcher Glenda Gray said the J&J vaccine, which is a single-shot Covid-19 vaccine, offers 91% to 96.2% protection against death. The vaccine also offers 67% efficacy against the beta variant of the coronavirus and 71% for the delta variant.
“Consistently after receiving the vaccine, very few deaths occurred in the vaccinated group compared to the control group and demonstrated a remarkable 96.2% protection against death,” Gray said. Reuters.
“This is our main endpoint and we can say that this vaccine protects health workers from dying,” he added.
The research study provided J&J vaccines to 477,234 health workers starting in mid-February and completed testing in May 2021.
South Africa’s own health regulator approved the J&J injection in April, and it is being used in a national vaccine program alongside Pfizer’s vaccine.
South Africa’s newly appointed Health Minister Joe Phaahla told the same briefing that the government planned to start using other vaccines approved by regulators, including the Sinovac shot.
“It was agreed … also that the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has now been shown to be effective against the Delta variant, we should also look at reusing it,” said Phaahla.
The vaccination campaign in South Africa was shaken because the government stopped vaccination with AstraZeneca. This vaccine is considered to provide drinking protection against the beta variant which was then the dominant strain. But now vaccinations have increased, with more than 8.3 million people already vaccinated as of Thursday.
