The research teams from Wuhan and Essen found in their studies that that there is a marker in human blood that shows at the beginning of the disease how severe it will be. The T cells, in particular the CD8-positive cells, provide information. They are activated by the immune system when infected and can detect and kill virus-infected cells. If there are few T cells in the blood, there is a very high risk of a severe course of the disease.

Another indication is given by CD8 cells and neutrophils that fight bacteria. According to the researchers, an increased number of neutrophils in the blood can lead to a decrease in the T cell population. The scientists at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Wuhan Union Hospital have been doing research together for years. They published the results of their German-Chinese study online in the specialist magazine “The Lancet EBioMedicine”. Ulf Dittmer, Director of the Institute of Virology at the University Medical Center Essen and China representative of the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen explains: “We want to better understand the course of the disease in order to recognize serious infection processes in good time and to develop new approaches for therapies.”
These findings mean that you can find out how vulnerable people from risk groups are before an infection – and can react. Cancer patients, for example, who already have a weakened immune system due to chemotherapy, can adapt the treatment during the corona crisis.
