Scientists from Germany and Norway have uncovered the mechanism that could explain why the AstraZeneca vaccine has led to thrombosis in rare cases. These are studies with small numbers, so they must be interpreted with caution.

“The vaccination will allow patients to develop antibodies, which is also the intention,” says German lead researcher Andreas Greinacher. However, rare antibodies that target their own platelets have also been found in the blood of affected patients. The conscious antibodies bind to those platelets and activate them, without there being a wound. This causes blood clots in the body.
