Researchers have found mammoth tusks in the sea, claimed to be the oldest

INDOZONE.ID – Citing CNN, a pilot named Randy Prickett and a scientist named Steven Haddock, researchers at the Montere Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) reportedly discovered mammoth tusks in 2019.

For your information, the mammoth itself is an ancient animal that has been extinct for thousands of years. The remains of the mammoth were about 185 miles offshore and at depths of up to 10,000 feet.

At the time, they reportedly only collected a piece of ivory. And in July 2021, they managed to get a complete sample. Seeing this, Steven Haddock commented on it.

“You start to expect the unexpected when exploring the deep sea, but I’m still surprised that we found ancient mammoth tusks,” he said.

“Our work examining this exciting discovery has just begun and we look forward to sharing more information in the future.”

On the other hand, scientists believe that this discovery could be the discovery of the oldest mammoth tusk in good condition that was found in North America.

Researchers also hope that the data collected will not only provide more information about the mammoth that was found, but also provide information about the species. Seeing this, Beth Shapiro as Principal Researcher at UCSC Paleogenomics Lab commented.

“Remains from mammoths from the North American continent are extremely rare, so we hope the DNA from these tusks will go a long way to perfecting what we know about mammoths in this part of the world,” he said in a statement.
