BOY ZONE – Antarctica is one of the harshest environments on Earth. The population on this cold continent remains around 1,000 people, mainly para researcher and scientists, and they will stay only one year.
These people mostly live in their stations, especially those that can adapt to escape the cold and prevent frequent blizzards.
One team, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), recently discovered what no one anticipated: an ecosystem thriving beneath the icy surface. Antarctica.
The never-before-seen icy river is described as a “hidden world”, a huge cave filled with lookalike animals shrimp very small in size.
This habitat is found beneath the Larsen Ice Sheet, a giant sheet of ice wedged into the east coast of the peninsula Antarctica.
The team then identified the river from the surface, and drilled at a depth of 1,640 feet with a hot water hose to reach the chamber below.
