Knowing the number of genes in a virus is very important for researchers before making drugs or vaccines, such as Covid-19. The new genes found in Covid-19 are thought to be able to provide clues to fighting the virus and speeding up the discovery of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“Overlapping genes may be one of the ways in which the Coronavirus has evolved to replicate efficiently, thwart immunity, or make itself transmitted,” said Chase Nelson, postdoctoral researcher at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Phys.
Nelson said that knowledge about overlapping genes and how they function would reveal new avenues of controlling Covid-19. The research team identified this new gene as ORF3D.
ORF3D is a new gene that overlaps and has the potential to encode more proteins than expected by chance. ORF3D was also found in the Corona virus on pangolins that were found previously.
In addition, ORF3d has been independently identified and has been shown to elicit a strong antibody response in Covid-19 patients. New gene proteins are produced during infection in humans.
“We do not yet know their function, including whether there is clinical significance. However, we estimate that this gene is relatively unlikely to be detected by a T-cell response, as opposed to an antibody response, and may have something to do with how the gene came about,” Nelson said.
