From medicines to treat hay fever to a special type of sugar: new methods could help with hair loss.

There are a variety of reasons that can lead to hair loss, including seasonal fluctuations. Especially in spring and autumn – when the temperature differences are greater – this can put strain on the scalp and hair follicles and lead to seasonal hair loss. Regardless of the cause, hair loss often represents a significant burden for those affected. There is currently no panacea, but there are new research approaches that appear promising.

The currently available remedies for hair loss can stabilize it and slightly improve hair density, but despite many years of research, a final solution has not yet been found. Nevertheless, scientists are constantly looking for effective remedies. The following four methods could therefore offer new hope for those affected:

  1. Hay fever medication: Research suggests that hay fever medications may also be effective for hair loss. Several studies suggest that a solution containing one percent of the antihistamine ceterizine could combat genetic hair loss.
  2. Vitamin-D: The “sun vitamin” is produced by the body through exposure to UV rays from the sun. A lack of vitamin D can disrupt the growth cycle and weaken the dermis – the layer of skin where hair follicles are located – which has been shown to increase the risk of hair loss. In one study, researchers showed that bald mice that were given vitamin D grew new hair.
  3. Arthritis medications: A special medication originally developed for patients with rheumatoid arthritis may also help with hair loss. In this autoimmune disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints. The situation is similar with inflammatory hair loss, called alopecia areata, in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles. Studies of arthritis patients showed that patients with bald patches grew new hair. However, these medications should only be taken after consulting a doctor as they can have unpleasant side effects, including life-threatening blood clots.
  4. A certain type of sugar: 2-Deoxy-D-Ribose is a type of sugar that occurs naturally in the body. When used in a scalp gel, it can stimulate hair growth. The sugar stimulates the growth of new blood vessels to carry oxygen-rich blood to tissues and organs.
