Jakarta (ANTARA) – Researcher at the Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology at the National Aeronautics and Space Institute (Lapan), Amalia Nurlatifah, said that the younger generation plays an important role in supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in tackling global warming.
“Because in 20 or 30 years it will be the younger generation who will hold the leadership milestone and we certainly want a better place for our children and grandchildren, maybe in 20 years, 30 years, so the business must start now,” Amalia said in the webinar. Young Generation Action for Environmental Sustainability in Jakarta, Thursday.

Amalia said what must be done is to reduce emissions and stabilize the level of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, and adapt to climate change that is in sight.
“This CO2 (Carbondioxide) we are releasing now is only 50 years away, so controlling it from now on is to reduce emissions and stabilize the level of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere,” he said.
Amalia said climate change is due to global warming, and global warming is due to rising air temperatures caused by increased greenhouse gas emissions, including those contributed from the use of fossil energy, land conversion, and transportation.
He said the highest source of greenhouse gas emissions was from the energy sector, which was 72 percent.
Climate change will have an impact, among others, the seasons will change such as the harvest and planting seasons will lengthen, the rainy and summer seasons will lengthen, as well as rising sea levels.
Then, more droughts and heat waves will occur. Hurricane, hurricane, cyclone will occur more often with stronger intensity.
“If allowed to continue the changes will continue to occur, the impact will continue to spread, the weather is extreme. Hurricane, storms, cyclones will occur more frequently. Sea levels will continue to rise. Ice in the Arctic will melt,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator for Dissemination of the Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology at Lapan, Lilik Slamet Supriatin, said that knowledge and concrete steps were needed to be able to continue environmental sustainability.

He said the younger generation can explore various potential efforts and joint movements to keep the environment sustainable, including reducing pollution to the environment, both on land, air and sea.
“The young generation in terms of knowledge is the millennial generation who are computer literate and internet, so it is not limited to the local level, but may have gone global,” he said.
The younger generation can also transmit positive attitudes and actions to care for and preserve the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
