Muhammad Isnur, chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), commented on the escalating trend of digital attacks against outspoken individuals. “So this has become a pattern of backlash or silencing of critical people,” Isnur stated on January 4, 2025.
Isnur characterized these digital attacks as a form of digital authoritarianism, expressing worry that the Indonesian government isn’t adequately addressing this issue. He cited several past cases of digital attacks against journalists and activists that faced stalled legal proceedings. “what? we suspect this was done by the authorities. We are worried that this is part of an operation to silence critical people,” he added.
The YLBHI is calling on the Indonesian government to provide better protection for human rights defenders, environmental activists, democracy advocates, and anti-corruption campaigners who voice criticism.
The doxing incident involved an anonymous Instagram account that allegedly released the researcher’s phone number, national ID card number, address, phone specifications, and even a Google Maps link to thier last known location on January 3rd. ICW Coordinator Agus Sunaryanto confirmed the incident and stated, “Because (ICW researchers’) personal data has been made public.”
Agus further emphasized the significance of the incident, stating, “Doxing should be seen as part of an effort to silence and limit critical public voices.” He argued that the OCCRP’s nomination of President Widodo should serve as a wake-up call to improve anti-corruption efforts in Indonesia, citing setbacks in corruption eradication and the rise of dynastic politics during Widodo’s presidency. Agus added, “There is doxing towards those who criticize Jokowi, it should be seen as strengthening that Jokowi deserves to be nominated for the OCCRP.”

This incident mirrors similar concerns in the United States, where journalists and activists also face online harassment and threats for their work. The case underscores the global challenge of balancing free speech with the need to protect individuals from online abuse.
