Research work, required | Large-scale research work for John Arild (68): – He can no longer walk like that

(Romerikes blade): The journey began at Marikollen in Rælingen. Iain Arild left home around 09.20 Saturday morning. The infamous man wanted to enjoy the nice weather in Østmarka. He was dressed only in trainers, shorts and a T-shirt.

– I followed the road down to Sætertjern. Then I looked at the map and found out that it is 4.7 kilometers to Myrdammen. It was a nice trip, I thought, said John Arild.

Soon Iain Arild wanted to know that the area consisted of animal tracks and thick forest, and no marked tracks.

– I have walked a lot, but not just in there. I probably wouldn’t have taken that route if I had known what kind of terrain I was going to be in, he says.

– Think of everything that could have happened

John Arild and his wife Unni Hole (70) were in contact for the last time at 7pm on Saturday night. He told her that he got lost, but that he would probably find a place to go, until she picked him up. He also said that his mobile phone had a low battery.

– Then I started to worry a lot, said Unni.

The next registration from John Arild never came. The woman was sitting at home and she felt a lump growing in her stomach.

– I called him again and again, but I didn’t get an answer, she says.

The couple’s two children came home to Unni. The son also tried to call John Arild, without success.

At 9.15pm she decided to call the police. They were quickly at her door, and teams were ready to search immediately. About 100 people participated in the survey work.

– It was completely unique. The police were with me for several hours and they were looking after us, and they gave us updates on how the investigation went along the way, says Unni.

The hours passed, and when darkness fell, neither Unni nor the children could sleep. She says that every possible scenario went through her head.

– We know that Iain Arild likes to go on long walks in the fields, but the fact that it would be such a long walk was definitely not planned, she says.

Worry took over.

– I cried and cried that night. Just think of everything that could have happened. He is very used to walking, but anyone can break a leg or have heart failure, says Unni.

– I sank to my thigh

Iain Arild likes to go on long walks, and he likes to explore new places that he hasn’t been to before. With a map on his mobile phone, he directed himself to Myrdammen in Rælingen. On the way, he encountered dense terrain with a lot of swamp.

– At some point in the evening, I went into a sinkhole. In a moment I had sunk to my thighs. I had to pull myself up quickly. Otherwise, I’m afraid I would be frustrated there, says John Arild.

It wasn’t just the bog that put pressure on John Arild. Huge spruce trees fell all around, and it was not easy to move past.

– Dry, sharp branches stood straight up. I was surprised once, because I got right in the side. Fortunately, he didn’t hit any soft spots, he says.

John Arild had entered the Østmarka National Park, where there is a lot of wild forest and rough terrain for hikers. He found the tracks of animals that he followed, and on the moving map he could see in which direction he should go, for a few kilometers, to reach settlements. Then his cell phone died.

– I was very cold

The police said Sunday RB that John Arild was found in good shape and not chilled. He himself says that he felt good, but that he was cold all night.

– I was very cold, because I was tired and I had sweat through my clothes. They don’t dry out in the evening, he says.

But with his time in the Armed Forces, John Arild had a few tricks up his sleeve, and he managed to keep his cool even when darkness fell.

– I made a tent out of my T-shirt. My arms and head were inside, so I breathed hot air into the T-shirt, and kept as much body heat as I could, he says.

Early in the morning he heard helicopters singing above him. But with wet clothes and cold in his body, helicopters that were looking for heat did not find John Arild. He was squatting in a gap, away from the path. He didn’t know how far it was down to Myrdammen.

Then he heard voices.

– I started shouting loudly and trying to communicate, but they didn’t hear me, he says.

He started walking towards the voices, and soon he found a bigger walking path.

– The voices are still shouting, so I went towards them. Suddenly I saw people. “I think it’s you we’re looking for,” they told me.

John Arild met the research teams. Together they followed the road down to Myrdammen. He was taken to Ahus for a thorough examination. Unni met a cheerful husband in the hospital.

– When the police called me that morning, I heard from the voice on the other end that they had good news, Unni laughs.

She tells of great relief and gratitude after the news that the man has been found.

Iain Arild is happy that the emergency services took care of his wife and children while he was away.

– It would be nice if they paid attention, I know that Unni was worrying him, he says.

He says that he did not fear for his own life, and that he feels that he was in control of the situation. But he wants to prepare more for the next forest trip.

– I will take emergency preparations and dry clothes to change so that those who are looking for warmth can find me if something happens, he says.

– You must also have enough power on your mobile phone, says Unni.

She is very happy to have her husband back.

– What do you think of Iain Arild going out on tour again soon?

– She is beautiful on the field. But he won’t get to walk like that again, says Unni.
