Reporting from Fox News, this finding distorts the picture of the classic Jurassic Park series. That said, the teeth on T. Rex and other large theropods were likely covered by lips.
“The teeth don’t stick out when the mouth is closed, only the lips are visible even in a wide open bite,” wrote the page, Monday (3/4/2023).
Thomas Cullen, a paleontologist and assistant professor at Auburn University, said his team had reconstructed the soft tissue anatomy, comparing tooth measurements and dental records.
“What you’re used to seeing on the big screen is inaccurate. This theropod dinosaur’s teeth weren’t as worn out as crocodiles, and most likely had lip-like coverings,” he said.
Cullen noted that dinosaur lips were very different from human lips, because although they covered the teeth, they could not be moved independently.
“In this way, dinosaur lips would be more similar to those of many lizards or amphibians, even if we usually associate lip structure with mammals like us,” he said.
