Jakarta (CAKAPLAH) – A study from researchers in China found booster injections of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccine were effective against the Delta variant. They say the results come about four weeks after someone gets the third dose of the vaccine.
According to the results of research conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Furan University, Sinovac, and other Chinese institutions, neutralizing antibody activity against the Delta variant was not detected in samples taken from recipients six months after they received the second dose of Sinovac vaccine.
However, the booster injection showed more than 2.5 times the neutralizing potential compared to the level seen about four weeks after the second injection.
However, they did not discuss the specifics of how antibody changes would affect the efficacy of Sinovac injections in preventing the Delta variant.
The laboratory study involved samples from 66 participants, including 38 volunteers who received two or three doses of the vaccine.
The research comes amid concerns about the efficacy of China’s vaccine against the Delta variant. This variant dominates cases of infection in the world today.
Some countries that rely heavily on Sinovac’s vaccine have also started giving booster shots, developed by Western pharmaceutical manufacturers, to people who have already had two vaccination shots.
The World Health Organization (WHO) plans to ship around 100 million doses of Sinovac and Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine mostly to Africa and Asia by the end of this month.
However, there are some countries that refuse to accept assistance with the vaccine, citing a lack of data on its effectiveness against the Delta variant.
Sinovac said around 1.8 billion doses of their vaccine had been shipped to almost the world by the end of August.
