ANKARA, KOMPAS.TV – Research in France revealed that people with mental disorders or ODGJ are at higher risk of dying from Covid-19 and should be categorized as a vulnerable group.
Launch Between, Saturday (31/7/2021), a study published this week in JAMA Psychiatry as quoted by Nursing in Practice concluded that Covid-19 was 1.8 times more likely to take the life of ODGJ.
JAMA Psychiatry is the monthly peer-to-peer medical journal of the University of Marseille.
According to the study, severe ODGJ such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are 2.3 times more likely to die from Covid-19 than patients without mental health problems.
The analysis, which reviewed 16 studies covering more than 19,000 medical records of people from seven countries, found even higher odds of death after adjusting for risk factors such as obesity and age in people with severe mental disorders (1.7 times) and overall mental disorders. (1.4 times).

The researchers urge public health decision makers to prioritize PLHIV in disease prevention, vaccination, treatment, and special training for hospital staff.
The study showed that differences in the immune system in people with bipolar or schizophrenia may explain the higher risk in this group.
However, the study noted that future studies should look at the risk of death for each mental health disorder, compared to the overall mental health disorder.
