Research says a quarter of children with COVID-19 experience prolonged COVID-19 symptoms or ‘Long COVID’. In such cases, the symptoms of COVID-19 in children persist for 4-12 weeks.
It refers to data from 21 studies in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. It was stated, among 80,071 children exposed to the Corona virus, 25 percent experienced prolonged symptoms. In some cases, persistent symptoms appear within 12 weeks.
To date, the study still requires further peer review. However, the important data in the research is believed to be a provision of information related to the prolonged symptoms of COVID-19.
“Until now, the main focus has been on the acute phase of the disease,” said the study’s authors.
“However, once the acute phase of COVID-19 is over, many people experience debilitating COVID-19 symptoms for months that require additional medical attention and follow-up.”
It is known, severe symptoms of COVID-19 are less common in children than in adults. However, a number of existing studies show that children can experience serious effects several weeks after being infected with the Corona virus, such as long COVID and multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).
In October 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) explained that long COVID-19 generally occurs three months after the initial exposure to COVID-19.
Furthermore, researchers describe the five most common long COVID symptoms in children and adolescents in the form of:
- Mood symptoms by 16.5 percent
- Fatigue by 9.7 percent
- Sleep disturbance by 8.4 percent
- Headache by 7.8 percent
- Respiratory symptoms by 7.6 percent
In addition, other frequently reported symptoms include nasal congestion, loss of appetite and changes in smell, as well as cognitive symptoms such as concentration and memory weakness.
