Research: Satellite internet in Ukraine taken offline by Russia

Investigators from the American intelligence service NSA have come to that conclusion after an investigation of several weeks. That’s by insiders confirmed to the Washington Post.

On February 24, the KA-SAT broadband network of the American company ViaSat in Ukraine and surrounding countries in Europe is said to have been partially brought down. That happened just when Russia started its attack on the neighboring country. It was not initially known whether the Kremlin was behind the attack, although intelligence agencies were suspected.

According to Wired the impact of the hack was significant. For example, the Ukrainian army is said to have used the service, seriously disrupting communications during the first days of the invasion. Civilians in and outside Ukraine are also said to have been affected. Furthermore, companies in Western Europe would also have been affected. For example, about 2000 wind turbines in Germany would still be offline after a month.

US Defense Contractor

When the conflict started, intelligence agencies already feared that Russia could carry out widespread cyberattacks. Initially it was thought that they did not take place, but now it is starting to appear that Russia is secretly after all some hacks has performed.

The Viasat hack has attracted the attention of a number of intelligence agencies, including the US and the French. That’s because ViaSat is a major player offering important services in many countries. The company would provide services to the US defense and its allies, among other things.

In the wake of the hack, the CISA and FBI warned that Russia may want to carry out more attacks. They said they were aware of possible threats against US and international networks.

Russia still denies

The Kremlin has denied involvement in cyberattacks since last year. However, there is growing evidence that to attack from Russia and ally Belarus are carried out on Ukraine.

In fact, the cyber war has been waged since October. Then sent the US government secretly sent IT experts and military personnel to Ukraine to defend its cyber infrastructure from attacks.
