SUBANG, TINTAHIJAU.com – A recent study presented at the European Pediatric Endocrinology Meeting in Liverpool, England, revealed important results regarding the effects of exposure to blue light from electronic devices on physical growth and development.
This study shows the potential dangers of blue light, especially in promoting faster bone growth and premature birth.
Research on Rats
This research was done on 36 mice that were divided into three groups with different treatments. The first group went through a normal light cycle, the second group was exposed to blue light for six hours a day, and the third group was exposed to blue light for 12 hours a day. It is published until the first signs of puberty appear.
As a result, mice exposed to blue light showed faster growth, especially in bones, and started growing earlier than the control group. These findings indicate that long-term exposure to blue light can affect the maturation of bone growth plates, leading to faster physical growth and early birth.
Effects on Child Growth
Dr. Aylin Kilinc Ugurlu, lead researcher, said that although the study was conducted on mice, the results raise similar concerns for children who are often exposed to the screens of electronic devices. “Long-term exposure to blue light can accelerate bone resorption, but it also risks causing premature bone ageing,” he said.
Acceleration of growth plate maturation due to exposure to blue light can lead to premature cessation of growth. As a result, children are at risk of being shorter than normal as adults.
Risks of preterm birth
Under normal conditions, girls reach their peak height between the ages of 14 and 16 years, and boys finish their growth at the age of 16 to 18 years. However, early birth can change this pattern, accelerating initial growth but stopping the growth process faster than it should.
Researchers stress the need for more research to understand the long-term effects of blue light exposure on children’s growth. Parents are also advised to limit the time their children use electronic devices, especially at night, to reduce the risk of overexposure to blue light.
These findings are a reminder of the importance of maintaining a balance in the use of technology to support children’s optimal growth and development.
