Research Reveals Most Effective Treatment Options for Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

The number of treatment options for multiple sclerosis (MS) has increased in recent years, but so has the question of what the most effective choice is. Neurologist Joost Smolders from Erasmus MC decided to conduct research into this together with health economists.

They improve mobility and thus function, work productivity and quality of life: the sphingosine-1 phosphate receptor (S1PR) modulators for MS are effective treatments for MS. “But it also comes with a hefty price tag,” outlines neurologist Joost Smolders, who, in addition to his clinical work, is also an associate professor in Rotterdam and head of the MS research and treatment center ErasMS. “Medication costs are the largest cost item for MS. Now that healthcare costs continue to rise and access to care is under pressure, I believe that society can expect our profession to look at how we can use expensive medicines as effectively as possible.”

Together with fellow neurologists Beatrijs Wokke and Ide Smets, and health economists Matthijs Versteegh and Simone Huygens, Smolders developed a computer model to compare three commonly used MS treatments with the same indication area: fingolimod, ozanimod and ponesimod. “We looked at the net health benefit in people with MS,” says Smolders. “We have different parameters for this in the model
