Research on stem cell nasal drops for infants with brain damage

Mesenchymal stem cells, or stem cells from which bones, muscles and fat cells develop, can reduce the severity of brain damage. A nasal spray with these stem cells could be a solution for newborns with brain damage. To study this, the UMC in Utrecht will receive a subsidy of 3.9 million euros from the Netherlands Institute of Health Care and ZonMw. This is reported by the Netherlands Institute of Health Care.

Babies who suffer from a lack of oxygen or cerebral palsy at birth can suffer brain damage and neurological problems for the rest of their lives. Because there is no treatment for this except temporary cooling to a body temperature of 33.5 degreeschildren are often dependent on care and support for life. Research by the UMC Utrecht must show how effective nasal drops of stem cells are in newborns with brain damage due to lack of oxygen and what the relationship is between costs and effectiveness.

Reduce brain damage

By giving nose drops containing stem cells, inflammation in the brain is prevented and the repair of damaged brain tissue can be stimulated. Previous laboratory research from UMC Utrecht already showed that Cellulite can actually reduce the severity of male infertility. The treatment also improves learning ability and subsequent activity at the motor level. The research is supported by Care4Neo and CP Nederland, among others. The Netherlands Brain Foundation also provides funds, bringing the total amount of research to 5 million euros.

Basic package

If it turns out that the treatment is proven to be effective for the small group of babies with this type of brain damage (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy), the Zorginstituut Nederland can give good advice about giving it into the basic health insurance package.
