Research: Obesity can make COVID-19 worse

in someone with obesity, the need for hospitalization, intensive care, and installation of a ventilator increases by 80 percent due to COVID-19,

ANKARA (Reuters) – People infected with the coronavirus and obesity problems are often worse off, but obesity also appears to have a number of protective effects, according to one of Turkey’s leading doctors.

The meta-analysis of 19 studies “shows that in individuals with obesity, the need for hospitalization, intensive care, and installation of a ventilator increases by 80 percent due to COVID-19,” said Dr. Okan Bulent Yildiz, an endocrinologist at the Hacettepe University Medical School in the capital Ankara.

When two billion people around the world have severe problems or obesity, the number of COVID-19 cases reaches nearly 50 million, said Yildiz. Recently, he and his colleagues are evaluating the relationship between these two aspects.

But contrary to the negative effects, said Yildiz, the meta-analysis also found “that obesity does not increase the risk of death in COVID-19 patients in the ICU. Mild to moderate obesity can even have a protective effect in intensive care. This is what is known as the obesity paradox. “

Once completed, the meta-analysis will later be entered into a journal, he added.

Food, sleep, stress, and exercise

Emphasizing the importance of daily physical activity during the pandemic, Yildiz said, “The amount of time spent at home during the pandemic, lack of physical activity, disturbed sleep patterns, and high levels of stress make weight control difficult for obese sufferers.”

He added that it even led to weight gain for those who previously had no weight problems.

“Everyone needs a healthy and balanced diet,” said the doctor, because food is an important factor in preparing the human body against disease.

Regarding stress, he warns, “The higher a person’s stress level, the harder it is for that person to lose weight.”

“It is impossible to control your weight if you are not physically active yourself. For this reason, sports both at home and outside must be done by adhering to social distancing rules,” he said.
