Research into racism in ‘Jan Smit Appgroep’ police Rotterdam | Inland

NRC reports this. The group was called the ‘Jan Smit Appgroep’ and apparently had an informal character, but according to internal whistleblowers, it shows how racism openly exists within the police force. After some police officers reported to the team chief in early 2019, a ‘corrective’ conversation was held, without hard measures.

“The statements in the app group went beyond borders in language and text,” says Karin Krukkert, deputy chief of police of the Rotterdam police unit.

White boy victim

The statements were made in response to a video that was circulating at the time. The images showed how a white fifteen-year-old boy was beaten up for several minutes by black peers in Spijkenisse.

One of the agents approves self-direction. “Hope they get caught, hopefully not by the police but first by others who give them even harder blows,” the app reads.

‘Declare’

Martin Sitalsing, police chief of the Central Netherlands and charged with tackling racism, wants a ‘hard-hitting approach’. He argues for reporting. “Those app groups are really a phenomenon within the police that you can find everywhere. I want to put together how we can combat this and not just deal with incidents. ”
