Research: Hyperloop from Amsterdam to Brussels within half an hour NOW

A fast magnetic hover train in an air pressure tube, a so-called hyperloop, can significantly reduce the travel time between Amsterdam and, among others, Brussels, Duisburg and Düsseldorf to less than half an hour, according to an exploratory study conducted on behalf of the province of North Holland on Thursday. .

The train would ensure that people from a much larger area can travel up and down for work every day, also outside the Netherlands.

“We know that people are willing to travel from door to door for an hour at most for their work. With such a super fast hyperloop, it suddenly becomes possible to cover much longer commuting distances within that time. That sounds promising. we are consulting with other authorities and parties to continue this research, “said Provincial Executive Jeroen Olthof.

The hyperloop is a means of transport that must be able to transport people and goods at a high-speed air pressure tube, up to 1,000 kilometers per hour. Tesla founder Elon Musk introduced the concept in 2012. Since 2016, it has been further developed by the Dutch company Hardt Hyperloop.

Connection to all of Europe

The hyperloop could eventually connect Amsterdam with The Hague, Groningen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Paris, among others. Ultimately, the train could connect Amsterdam to the whole of the Netherlands and Europe, the exploratory study shows. According to the research, the hyperloop is therefore good for the economy of the Amsterdam metropolitan region.

The connection would also enable Schiphol to offer international routes in a sustainable manner: short-haul flights can be replaced by the magnetic levitation train.

It is not yet clear when the first hyperloop should come. In the near future, the province will examine with other parties whether there should be a follow-up investigation.
