Now we princess Amalia appear more and more in the media, the name is also increasingly chosen as a child’s name, according to a study by Made for Moments. The princess’s name is expected to become even more popular after this weekend, as she will play a prominent role during her father’s birthday this Saturday.

From attention to naming

The increased popularity does not come out of the blue. Patricia Pauwelsmarketer at Made for Moments says the following: “It is related to her more active role within the royal family. People see her more often on television, read her name, or in other words they come into contact with her more than before. We know from previous studies that more attention leads to more names. But we also know that people do not like to name names if they have a negative association with the name. The fact that it is happening more and more here is a positive development for the Royal Family.”

Amalia van Oranje herself was also named after her ancestor Amalia of Solms (1602 – 1675). This Amalia married a prince Frederick Henry of Orange and put the Hague Court on the map in Europe in the 17th century. She increased the wealth of the House of Orange and negotiated political marriages that proved to be of great importance to the power and prestige of the family. One of her descendants, grandson of the stadtholder-king Willem IIIwas himself crowned King of England, Ireland and Scotland in 1689.

Unlike Beatrix and Willem-Alexander

The development of popularity of the name Amalia is different from that of her grandmother, Princess Beatrix. There, the use of the first name increased from around 18 times a year before her birth, to more than 200 in the year of Beatrix’s birth (1938) and to almost 300 in 1941. The name is now virtually no longer used, in the period 2013- By 2023, fewer than 10 children in total were named Beatrix.

With Amalia’s father, King Willem-Alexander, popularity followed a similar pattern. From around 500 mentions before his birth, to around 900 in the years that followed. This effect was only visible for the first name ‘Alexander’. The name ‘Willem’ was already one of the most popular children’s names at the time, and no change was visible.
