Research Findings: SARS-CoV-2 in Cervids – No Virus Detected in Fallow Deer and Roe Deer

Two years ago, the World Organization for Animal Health called on all countries to look at SARS-CoV-2 in cervids, after white-tailed deer tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the United States and Canada. Research showed that they had passed the infection on to other deer. Research into Covid in cervids has also been conducted in the Netherlands in recent years. Samples from fallow deer and roe deer have been tested for the Sars-CoV-2 virus. No virus or antibodies were found.

In the Netherlands, the research focused on fallow deer in the dunes, roe deer spread across the country, and on cervids that were brought to the DWHC for investigation into the cause of death. 164 samples were received from fallow deer, 25 from roe deer and 54 animals from the DWHC biobank were tested.

It is concluded that the tested fallow deer and roe deer were probably not exposed to the Sars-CoV-2 virus either at the time of the research or in the months before. Both the nasal swabs and lung samples were negative for SARS-CoV-2 virus. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were not detected in any of the blood samples.
