Research confirms: AZ stadium roof collapsed due to multiple errors

The AZ stadium roof has collapsed due to a variety of causes. Design errors, weak welds and weak spots from previous storms are the main causes, engineering firm Royal Haskoning DHV concludes in a study about which NH Nieuws writes.

The investigation was commissioned by the football club.

Part of the roof of the AFAS stadium came down on August 10 last year. There was a strong southwestern wind that day. Nobody was injured.

At the end of August it was already known that the roof before the collapse was probably already weakened. It was also clear that things had gone wrong with the design. For example, it turned out that a downward wind load had not been taken into account.

Investigation completed

The study results do not differ much from the findings in August, but now the study is now complete and the results are final.

AZ is happy with the clarity. “It is great that Royal HaskoningDHV has carefully investigated the cause of the partial collapse of the roof,” says AZ’s general manager Robert Eenhoorn.

“Now we can take a new step. In consultation with all relevant parties, we now focus on the future and we will start working hard as soon as we have left the corona crisis behind us.”

Playing in stadium ADO Den Haag

After the roof collapsed, AZ had to play a large part of the first half of the season at home at ADO Den Haag station. After the roof was almost completely removed, games could be played in Alkmaar again from December. The club has received a permit to build a new roof.
