Research Calls Breathing Air Pollution Particles for 1 Hour Triggers Heart Attacks

JAKARTA – A study in China found exposure to particulate air pollution for one hour even at levels lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines, risks causing heart attack.

As reported by AFP Wednesday (27/4/2022), according to research, the risk of such a heart attack is highest among the elderly and during cold weather.

The same study found that exposure to four particles of air pollution can trigger a heart attack called acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

ACS occurs when blood flowing to the heart is blocked. The highest risk occurs in the first hour when a person is exposed to air pollution, but decreases in the following hours.

“The adverse cardiovascular effects of air pollution have been well documented. However, many are still surprised because the effects are very rapid,” said Professor Haidong Kan from Fudan University in Shanghai.

Kan led the study, which was published in the journal Circulation of the American Heart Association last Friday.

According to him, four common air pollution particles such as fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide have the potential to trigger heart attacks.

Fine particles in solid or liquid form, including from vehicle exhaust, power plants and other sources, can cause heart disease, stroke and other health problems in addition to being the cause of approximately 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide.

Kan said, these contaminant particles are very fine and can go deep into paru-paru, even blood vessels when breathing.
