At least 27 people are still missing after the volcanic eruption on the Indonesian island of Java. The body of a 13-year-old boy was found this morning in a village covered in mud, rocks and ash by the eruption of the Semeru volcano. At least fifteen people have been killed.
Dozens of people are in hospital, mainly with burns. Thousands of homes have been destroyed in the disaster area.
Now that the weather has improved, the search for victims and survivors has resumed after a short hiatus.
On Saturday, Semeru spewed massive amounts of glowing lava and ash into the air to a height of 12 kilometers. At least 1,700 people have fled, the AP news agency reported. Some of the people living near the volcano have stayed to protect livestock and other property.
Indonesia has more than a hundred volcanoes. Tens of thousands of people live on the slopes because the soil is fertile.
