Islamabad (CNN) Eight people, including six school children, were left behind after a lift linking two towns in northern Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province suddenly stopped mid-air on Wednesday. Authorities are rushing to rescue him.

At 9 a.m., one of the lift’s two cables snapped, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA). The lift carrying eight people stopped at a height of 274 meters above the ground.

According to local officials, a reconnaissance helicopter was first dispatched to rescue the children. Then a larger helicopter arrived.

Pakistan’s interim prime minister Kakar has ordered an immediate shutdown of all “aging and unlawful lifts” across the country.

Many children living in the state’s mountainous areas use lifts to get to and from school. Among them are dangerous lifts that do not receive regular inspections.
