Rescue Operation on Dumpling Mountain: Man Lost in One of the Most Remote Places in the United States

The man had lost his way on Dumpling Mountain, a mountain in Katmai National Park. That is one of the most remote places in the United Statesonly accessible by boat or plane, the British broadcaster BBC writes on its website.

A live stream from Dumpling Mountain could be viewed via the website of the organization Explore, which makes webcams in nature reserves accessible. The man briefly held his head in front of the webcam (video: see below). Although the stream does not play any sound, viewers thought they recognized the words “lost” and “help.”

“There is someone in the picture who is in trouble,” one viewer reported in the comments on the site. With a thumbs down, the man would also have indicated that he had lost track.

Unharmed

Explore employees contacted park administrators, who sent a rescue team to the webcam location. Three and a half hours after the report, the man was found unharmed and was brought to safety.

At this time of year, the seven live streams from Katmai National Park are always well watched, as the park holds its traditional fat bear competition next month.

The bears prepare for hibernation by stuffing themselves with salmon in September and October. Viewers can vote for their favorite fat bear at the end.
