A male leopard from Ukraine arrived at the AAP Foundation on Friday. The animal was discovered by Ukrainian soldiers last year. The leopard had been left without food and water and showed “signs of severe post-traumatic stress”, according to the foundation.
The AAP Foundation suspects that the leopard was kept as a pet, which is not the intention. “A leopard should never have to live as a pet, let alone be left to fend for itself in the middle of a war, confined without food or water,” said Pablo Delgado, head of the big cat division at AAP.
The leopard had been in a Wild Animal Rescue shelter near Kyiv since December. The International Fund for Animal Welfare and Wild Animal Rescue then arranged a transfer to AAP’s Spanish shelter. Big cats, among other things, are taken care of there. Delgado hopes that the leopard in Spain will receive the “rest and care it deserves”.
The AAP Foundation has already taken in a special animal from Ukraine eleven times before. These were nine lions, an African wild dog and a lampoon monkey. These animals also came from private ownership, a trend that AAP wants to combat by advocating better regulation at European level.
