Two hikers who lost their way while climbing Sanbangsan Mountain in Jeju, a scenic spot and natural monument, were rescued by fire authorities. Jeju Island plans to check whether people enter without permission as Sanbangsan Mountain is a restricted public area.

According to the Jeju Island Fire and Safety Headquarters on the 8th, at around 9:45 am on this day, a woman in her 60s, A, and two people (residents of Seoul) reported to the fire department 119 at Sanbangsan Mountain in Sagye-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, saying they were “lost.”

When the rescue team arrived at the scene, the reporters were found near the cliff. Firefighting authorities dispatched a fire helicopter, Hallamae, and rescued them safely. They were in good health and were not taken to the hospital.

During the fire investigation, they stated, “Yesterday (the 7th), while going up the trail, the road was cut off and I tried to come back, but I got lost. It got dark, so I had to stay overnight. Even though it was bright, I couldn’t find the way and reported it.”

Sanbangsan Mountain in Jeju is a scenic spot, and the rock wall plant area at the top has been designated as a natural monument.

Sanbangsan Mountain, which is mostly made up of rock walls, can be accessed via an official trail up to Sanbanggulsa Temple located halfway up the mountain. Anything beyond that is a restricted public area under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. To visit, you must obtain prior permission.

Anyone who enters the premises without permission is subject to imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million won.

The Jeju Island World Natural Heritage Headquarters plans to secure their personal information and investigate whether they have violated the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. If a violation of the Cultural Heritage Protection Act is confirmed, a complaint will be filed with the Seogwipo Police Station.
