Rescue Maneuver Saves Lives During Severe Flooding in New York

Tightening a rope, so that people could hold on to it, while they walked with their feet submerged in the water. That was the rescue maneuver that allowed them to stay calm.

According to a “body cam” video released by the New York Police, the episode occurred on July 9, around 6:40 p.m.

In the West Point area, rainfall reached 8.12 inches from Sunday through Monday morning.

“Stay alert and have an evacuation plan ready”

“Stay vigilant, monitor local forecasts and have an evacuation plan ready if you are in a danger zone,” said the state authority, assuring that the next 48 hours (Monday and Tuesday) would be dangerous due to extreme weather conditions.

It also declared a State of Emergency for Orange and Ontario counties, the two towns significantly affected.

“The rain was advancing very quickly,” said a couple affected

Our reporter Mariela Salgado, from Univision 41, went to the town of Stony Point, where water invaded homes, breaking out windows and burying vehicles.

An elderly couple from the town recounted the impressive movements of the water, due to the rains.

“The rain was coming so fast that the creek kept coming up here and over the rocks. It was moving so fast that each wave moved forward a foot,” Cindy Beyers recounted.

Fifteen homes in total were affected in Stony Point. They all tell the story of an event not seen in at least 30 years and of cataclysmic proportions.

Kathy Hochul requested emergency funds from the Federal Government

For his part, our reporter Joaquín Torres reached Highland Falls, in Orange County, where the rain left destroyed roads, landslides and fallen trees.

He indicated that about 6 people were climbing on Bill Mountain and were rescued at the time of the floods. Among those affected was a child with a blow to the head.

While the notices remain active, at least until this Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul has already requested emergency funds from the Federal Government.

Likewise, some Hispanic workers try to reach Highland Falls to solve communication problems that the inhabitants have, however, they have not been able to access due to the destruction of the asphalt and the closure of several roads. It is estimated that these people do not have telephone or internet service.
