Rescue could take days: mudslide includes 500 tourists

Heavy rains trigger a mudslide in a Canadian ski area. An access road is buried and around 500 tourists are meanwhile cut off from the outside world.

A mudslide has trapped around 500 tourists in a western Canadian ski resort. After heavy rainfall, a mile-long section of the access road to the Sasquatch Mountain Resort was filled with mud, the Department of Transportation of the Province of British Columbia said. It could take five to six days to clear the street.

There was concern that there would not be enough food and supplies to feed those trapped because a power outage would make communication difficult. However, the resort staff and many volunteers had started to build a supply chain. “There is a great need for food up here, but we got the electricity back much sooner than expected. That removed a lot of fears,” said a fire department spokesman.

The resort is located approximately one hundred kilometers east of the city of Vancouver. Resort manager Shelby Lim told CBC that tourists could leave the site by helicopter. To do this, they have to pay Canadian $ 150 per person. However, according to Lim, the majority of vacationers decided to stay at the resort until the road is clear.
