– We received a call at 05.40 and had to depart ten minutes later, says the skipper on board the lifeboat “Halfdan Grieg”.

Nilsen was out on another mission the day before, where a boat outside Andøya had set nets in the propeller and needed help out in rough seas.
– There was a boat of the same size with three young people who were out. They are young and not afraid of anything.
Before going to bed on Saturday night, he checked out Marine TrafficMarine TrafficMarine Traffic is a platform that tracks vessels at sea in real time. to see who was out.
– Then I saw the boat outside here, and thought “What the hell are you guys doing out in this weather?” So when Coastal Radio rang, I immediately knew who it was. We have helped them before.
– These are young boys. I have a background in fishing and have been there myself, so these are guys I have a lot of heart for. Young, energetic guys who fight outside in all kinds of weather. So kudos to them. Sometimes you end up in unfortunate circumstances.
Nilsen also praises two local boats, “Havbåra” and “Leander”, both of which immediately went towards the casualty when the alarm went off.

Even Selvåg (19) was one of two nineteen-year-olds on board the boat.
– We were on our way in after going sei fishing. A polar low pressure came in and we had to put our nose towards land. But then we started taking in water.
A snake on board the boat had jumped off, so that water got in where there shouldn’t be water. We stopped the machine ourselves to prevent it from being destroyed, but we couldn’t start the auxiliary motor because of the water and an earth fault.
– It was a dramatic experience then and there, says the nineteen-year-old, and emphasizes that he is happy that it went well.
PSSST! The two nineteen-year-olds were actually out sei fishing. But got mostly cod. a total of two tonnes.
