The Tricahue School of Requínoa inaugurated a unique space dedicated to the protection and care of an emblematic species: the tricahue parrot. This initiative, promoted by ornithologist Francisco Fadel and supported by the school’s educational community, marks a milestone in the conservation of biodiversity in the region.
“The initiative and conservation project is very good, since it brings us closer to an incredible species such as the Tricahue parrot and to understanding the importance of the parrot in our ecosystem. The project was born because of all the parrots that are injured in the spring-summer season due to conflicts with fruit tree areas and that is where the project was born from when we began to see many injured parrots,” said the ornithologist.
La Lorera, as this shelter has been called, has the capacity to house and care for 7 Tricahue parrots that are in captivity. This space will not only serve as an exhibition center and hatchery, but also as a rehabilitation place for those parrots that cannot be released due to various causes such as electrocution, gunshots, shocks or poisoning.
“The parrot is that all parrots that cannot be released by the wildlife recovery centers –Cerefas- will be housed in the exhibition center and hatchery of the Tricahue school. It was born to bring the species closer to children, so that they can understand it, bring biodiversity and ornithofauna such as the tricahue parrot closer, and what better than the Tricahue School where its emblem is the tricahue parrot,” said the promoter of the project.
FIRST SCHOOL IN THE REGION WITH SAG CERTIFICATION
To carry out this project, the school had to request certification from the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), becoming the first educational establishment in the region to obtain it. This certification allows them to have wildlife under their care, meeting the highest standards of animal protection and well-being.
This was explained by Diego Ramírez, regional manager of the SAG Wildlife Unit “Our service has always sought alliances with third parties with this role of biodiversity protection. In this case, the Tricahue School became a tremendous ally, because the birds we see here are not caged parrots, but animals that are being given another chance at life, because they have had some impact produced by the man who took them. to lose their abilities to live wild in the environment. Some have fractures, other injuries that disable them from searching for food or surviving.”
The environmental educator and person in charge of sustainability at the Tricahue school, Anita Aguirre, highlighted the importance of this project as a space for learning and environmental awareness where all students will participate in the care and management of the parrots, thus contributing to their conservation “it is a pride, it fills us with happiness to see how our students are part of this wonderful project, because not only is it a space where these parrots will live, but it is a place full of learning and environmental awareness,” said Aguirre.
THEY INVITE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW THE SPACE
The Tricahue parrot, which is present from Coquimbo to Maule, is an emblematic species of the area whose population was on the verge of extinction in the 90s. Now, thanks to initiatives such as that of the Tricahue School, it is sought not only its conservation, but also raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and biodiversity.
This is why Jorge Olivares, Rector of the Tricahue school, invites the community to participate and visit this space, which is not only a conservation center, but also a place of learning and connection with nature.
“Today marks a great milestone, the certification by the SAG to have tricahue parrots within the school as a learning experience that not only impacts the students, but also the community. The invitation is open for you to visit us and see how the school works on sustainability as part of its educational project, we have a club of environmental forgers, we are certified at a level of excellence and this has allowed us to move forward,” said the school rector.
This project, promoted by the “Loro Tricahue” Blacksmiths Club, seeks not only to protect this species, but also to educate about the importance of responsible human intervention in the conservation of the ecosystem.

It has been a very good experience, it is a joy for me to come visit this wonderful creature called the Tricahue parrot every recess”
Colegio Tricahue and its Lorera represent a joint effort to preserve the natural wealth of the region and promote environmental education as a fundamental part of the training of its students.
