SAN ANTONIO – A state representative wants to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines are only accessible to Texas residents and citizens. This initiative comes after alleged reports and complaints that tourists are arriving to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“We want Texas residents and Texas citizens to have the first opportunity to receive these vaccines,” said Eddie Morales, state representative for District 74.
Morales sent a letter to the Department of Health to suggest the implementation of a policy focused on putting Texans as a priority in the administration of COVI-19 vaccines.
“This is not a problem where we are wanting to discriminate against the people of Mexico. We are also hearing the same problems in Canada, where foreigners are traveling to the United States and receiving these vaccines. So we are in a plan where what little there is we should use for the residents and citizens of Texas, “he added.
If this policy is implemented, proof of residence would have to be shown.
“Payment for water, payment for electricity, a license, something that can be verified; the cell phone bill, something that can be done that they can receive and verify that they are Texas residents, ”Morales explained.
For his part, Ron Nirenberg, Mayor of San Antonio, said he would support a measure that restricts the doses against the coronavirus that Bexar County receives only for its residents.
So far, the state of Texas does not require documents that prove residency or citizenship in the United States for people who manage to schedule an appointment to get vaccinated.
