Call of Duty takes a break from the series’ annual launches until next year. That’s if we can believe a recent report from Bloomberg.
Rumors of a waiting year for the popular shooter series appeared earlier this year. Sources with knowledge of the situation now say that the decision has been made, which in that case means that 2023 will be the first year since 2004 that Call of Duty does not get a new feature.
The change to the traditional Call of Duty formula comes after weak results for last year’s Vanguard. Players are no longer as eager to jump on to the next – especially when they have free access to the ever-popular battle royale game Warzone.
2023 will certainly not be completely empty for Call of Duty. Activision is reportedly going to pump out extensions and other new content for this year’s Call of Duty sequel to the Modern Warfare game from 2019 – and the next edition of Warzone.
When the series eventually returns, potentially in 2025, it will be with Treyarch at the helm. According to Bloomberg, the Black Ops developer will also help with the development of another free game, which is supposed to come next year. Whether this is Warzone 2 or something completely different is currently unclear.
