Elections led by absenteeism yesterday shook the traditional almost absolute dominance of the Democratic Party in New York, leaving room for at least three significant victories for the Republican opposition: the challenger Kristy Marmorato (D13-The Bronx) and the re-elected Vickie Paladino (D19 -Queens) in the Municipal Council, and in Suffolk County (Long Island).
Paladino comfortably validated (60.4%) his 2021 victory over Tony Avella, who this time achieved 39.6% at this point in the count. Just two years ago the result had been much closer: 47.2% for the Republican and 45.7% for the Democrat.
Marmorato’s projected victory looks much louder: “His victory breaks a Republican curse in the Bronx for almost 20 years,” he ironically stated. Daily News. However, Hispanic councilor Marjorie Velázquez had not recognized her defeat until last night: with 81% of the votes counted, the challenger’s advantage was 52.85% versus 47.15%. This, in relative numbers, is just 700 votes.
Other wins reported last night were more predictable, being mostly Democrats like Queens prosecutor Melissa Katz with 67.55% and in the Municipal Council: Christopher Marte (D1-Manhattan), Erik Bottcher (D3-Manhattan), Keith Powers (D4-Manhattan), Julie Menin (D5-Manhattan), Gale Brewer (D6-Manhattan), Diana Ayala (D8-Manhattan), Eric Dinowitz (D11-El Bronx), Pierina Sánchez (D14-The Bronx), Happy Oswald (D15-El Bronx), Rafael Salamanca (D17-El Bronx), Amanda Farias (D18-El Bronx), Tiffany L. Cabán (D22-Queens), Jennifer Gutierrez (D34-Queens/Brooklyn) y Alexa Aviles (D38-Brooklyn), among other seats.
