Republican US Congressman George Santos from New York, elected to Congress in November of this year, admitted that he “did stupid things”, that is, he lied about his biography. Santos said he was a graduate of New York’s prestigious Baruch College, but the school has not confirmed this.

“I’m not a graduate of any university. I’m embarrassed and sorry for embellishing my bio,” the 34-year-old congressman admitted to the New York Post this week. Santos also did not work at the financial firms Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. The politician explained that the mention of the companies before was “simply a choice of words” and he has not worked “directly” in them. During the primary, he also claimed that his grandparents “fled persecution of Jews in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and then fled persecution again during World War II.” This suggested that Santos had Jewish roots, but it turned out to be new to New York’s Jewish community. The deputy admitted that he had “made a mistake” and apologized only when the newspaper “The New York Times” was interested in the veracity of his curriculum vitae. Republican Party officials have yet to comment on the scandal Tuesday morning.
