Republican presidential nomination race heats up with Christie, Pence and Bergam announcing candidacies

In the US, the battle for the Republican Party’s nomination for the US presidential election scheduled for next year is gaining momentum. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former US Vice President Mike Pence and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bergham announced their candidacies this week with filings and official campaign kick-offs. In an intense battle for the party’s nomination, they will have to compete with former president Donald Trump, who is at the top of the polls, as well as a number of other candidates, the best known of whom are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

The winner of this fight will have to face the Democratic candidate in the election, which is likely to be the current president, Joe Biden.
