Republican Presidential Debate without Trump: Christie and Ramaswamy in Heated Exchange with Haley

On Thursday night, the fourth and final televised debate between the Republican presidential candidates, minus Donald Trump, took place in Alabama.

On stage were Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

The problem for everyone is that they are far behind former President Donald Trump in the polls, but that didn’t stop them from attacking each other.

– Disgusting

It was probably most intense when Christie fired at Ramaswamy.

– Let me tell you something, Christie raged at Ramaswamy after the businessman had suggested that Haley lacked basic knowledge about the war in Ukraine.

– This is the fourth debate where, within the first 20 minutes, you would have been named America’s most disgusting boastful pope. So shut up for a little while, thundered Christie, who has usually used much of his speaking time during the debates to attack Trump.

Ramaswamy first laughed off the ex-governor’s outburst before launching a proper counter-attack.

– Chris, your version of foreign policy experience was closing a bridge from New Jersey to New York, Ramaswamy said, waving his right index finger as usual.

The 39-year-old’s rant was a jab at Christie when his administration in New Jersey closed a busy bridge into New York as political revenge against a small-town mayor who had not supported him in his bid for re-election, according to the New York Times .

But Ramaswamy was not done there:

– Then do everyone a favor. Just get off the stage, enjoy a good meal and get the hell out of the campaign.

Pleased Trump

Elsewhere in the debate, as mentioned, Christie spent a lot of time attacking Trump, but Ramaswamy and DeSantis clearly went after Haley. The latter has recently been able to show several good opinion polls and therefore it was perhaps not so surprising that she had to defend herself more often during this debate.

DeSantis accused Haley of shunning media criticism, while Ramaswamy believes the former ambassador is too close to business interests as she has received renewed attention from financial contributors. Haley responded, among other things, by saying that the opponent is just envious.

But despite uplifting opinion polls, Haley is still far behind Trump, and Washington Post writes that the team around the former president is very pleased with the decision not to stand in the debates.

It has denied his opponents the opportunity to attack him face to face and the polls have not shown that the competitors have been able to shake Trump’s dominance.

They show that around 60 percent of Republicans want the former president as their presidential candidate in 2024 as well.
