North Dakota Governor and Republican presidential candidate Doug Burgum has suffered a high-grade tear of his Achilles tendon while playing basketball, according to a source familiar with the situation. The injury occurred during a game of pick-up basketball with his staff on Tuesday. As a result, Burgum will be on crutches and will have to decide whether he is physically able to participate in the upcoming debate.
Burgum, 67, is set to attend the candidates’ walk-through of the debate event site on Wednesday afternoon. Afterward, he will determine if he can take part in the debate itself. The source stated that Burgum understands the physical demands of the debate, which would require him to stand behind a podium for two hours. Despite the injury, the source described Burgum as a “total cowboy” who is not phased by injuries and pain.
The governor, who is a lifelong athlete, is familiar with sports injuries, according to the source. Other candidates have reached out privately to inquire about his well-being. Republican Senator Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy have also posted on social media, wishing Burgum a speedy recovery.
Burgum is one of the eight candidates in the debate lineup, which will be aired on Fox News at 9 p.m. ET. He has described himself as the least-known contender on the stage and hopes to use the debate as an opportunity to introduce himself and his campaign. Burgum qualified for the debate stage by meeting the Republican National Committee’s 40,000-unique-donors threshold and the polling requirements. He also signed the pledge to support the eventual GOP presidential nominee.
Currently serving his second term as North Dakota governor, Burgum announced his run for president in 2024 in June. Despite having less name recognition compared to other GOP candidates, his campaign focuses on the economy, energy, and national security.
