On Saturday, the Republican Party revealed an unconventional temporary plan to finance American federal institutions, which are threatened within a few days with the possibility of closing their activities.
New Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said this two-part plan is “a necessary text to put House Republicans in the best possible position to defend conservative victories.”
Johnson added on the X platform, “The bill will end the ridiculous tradition during the holiday season of submitting huge and burdensome spending bills just before the Christmas holiday,” without providing further details about the text.
American media said that under this unusual plan, some bills necessary to maintain the continuity of federal services will be passed within the framework of a short-term law until January 19, while the rest will be postponed until February 2.
This would allow Congress time to pass various spending bills, without allocating funding to Israel, Ukraine, and others to secure the borders, according to media reports.
However, some Republicans have criticized the plan because it does not include the funding cuts they had hoped for. Therefore, it is not certain that the party that has a simple majority in the House of Representatives will be able to adopt it, let alone the Senate controlled by Democrats.
The federal budget ends on Friday evening, November 17, at midnight.
If an agreement cannot be reached by that date, the world’s largest economy will suddenly slow down, 1.5 million government employees will be deprived of their salaries, and air navigation will be disrupted.
The last negotiations over the US federal budget at the end of September plunged Congress into chaos.
At that time, representatives of Trump’s supporters pushed for the removal of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, rejecting an agreement he concluded at the last minute with the Democratic camp. This set a precedent, as the Speaker of the US House of Representatives had never been impeached.
Then it took three weeks to elect a new president of the council, during which the approval of laws was delayed.
