Republican Majority Leader Stephen Scalise Drops Out of Speaker Race as House Republicans Fail to Unite

Republican Majority Leader of the US House of Representatives Stephen Scalise announced he is leaving the race for speaker after House Republicans failed to unite behind his candidacy.

As “European Truth” writes, this is reported Reuters.

Scalise, who the day before his fellow party members elected as a new candidate to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, he fell short of the 217 votes needed to be elected because several of his fellow Republicans said they would not support his candidacy.

“I have just informed my colleagues that I am withdrawing my candidacy for the position of speaker,” he told reporters.

Republicans ended their meeting Thursday night without agreeing on who their nominee would be. They will meet again at 16:00 Kyiv time on Friday.

Several Republicans had previously said they would support Scalise’s challenger, Jim Jordan, who lost in Wednesday’s party vote. According to a Reuters source, Jordan urged his supporters to vote for Scalise.

Patrick McHenry, who was named speaker pro tempore following the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is seen as a possible backup candidate at least in the short term while budget bills and international aid can be passed.

Some Republicans, the agency notes, are also suggesting that McHenry’s temporary powers could be expanded to overcome the paralysis caused by the lack of a permanent speaker.

Let us remind you that on October 3, the positions of the Speaker of the House of Representatives lost Kevin McCarthy. This happened under pressure from the far-right wing of his Republican Party, where he was accused of collaborating with Democrats and a “secret agreement” to help Ukraine.

US House of Representatives will not be able to pass new lawsincluding assistance to Ukraine, until a new speaker is elected.
