Republican George Santos rules out competing to continue representing New York after reports of violating several laws – El Diario NY

The Republican representative George Santos confirmed that he will not compete for re-election in the 2024 cycle for District 3 of New York, which makes up part of Queens and Long Island.

“I will NOT seek re-election for a second term in 2024,” the Republican wrote on platform X, formerly Twitter.

The announcement came after the House Ethics Committee’s report, which concluded that Santos would have violated several federal laws for fraudulent acts during his campaign.

Santos accused of being a victim of a type of political persecution and defamation, although he faces 23 criminal offenses for fraud and impersonation, for which he will face trial in the Eastern District Court of New York.

“The Committee did everything possible to defame me and my legal team,” Santos said. “It is a disgusting politicized smear that shows how far our federal government has fallen.”

In his message, Santos mixes political issues with his legal problems, even mentioning the problems at the border.

What the Ethics Committee report says

The House Ethics Committee released its report after several months of investigating Santos.

Republican Representative Michael Guest (New Jersey), chairman of the Committee, and Democratic Representative Susan Wild (Pennsylvania), ranking member of the Committee, said that the Investigative Subcommittee (ISC) report on the alleged acts committed was endorsed by Saints.

“At the conclusion of its investigation, the ISC unanimously concluded that there was substantial evidence that Representative George Santos knowingly caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission,” the congressmen said in a statement.

Among the findings it is reported that Santos used campaign funds for personal purposesin addition to participating in fraudulent conduct.

“He engaged in knowing and willful violations of the Ethics in Government Act as it relates to his Financial Disclosure Statements (FD) filed with the House,” the report states.
