One of the contenders for the US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, Vivek Ramaswami, has privately stated that, once he becomes president, he will withdraw the United States from NATO.

Last October, he told the same publication that the idea of the United States leaving NATO was “reasonable,” but did not support the idea of the United States leaving the alliance.
However, the Republican candidate, who also proposed withdrawing the United States from the UN, notes Politico, in private life is of the opinion that the time has long come to withdraw the United States from NATO.
When asked about his non-public comments, presidential candidate campaign spokeswoman Trisha McLaughlin declined to directly comment on what he would do about the Alliance, but did not deny Ramaswamy’s position.
“Vivek is seriously concerned that most NATO allies are not meeting their military investment commitments and will, if necessary, reconsider our own support. He also believes that NATO’s post-Cold War expansionism has unduly increased the risk of a major conflict with the Russian Federation,” she said she.
Ramaswamy is not the only Republican candidate wary of NATO. The party’s front-runner for the nomination, Donald Trump, has discussed the possibility of the United States leaving the alliance during his presidency and may do so if he returns to the Oval Office.
“We must complete the process begun under my administration of a fundamental reassessment of NATO’s purpose and mission,” his campaign website says.
What preceded: Previously US Congress approved lawwhich would prevent any president from withdrawing the United States from NATO without the approval of the Senate or House of Representatives.
Before that Ramaswami promisedthat, if elected president, he would recognize the Russian takeover of Ukraine and close its path to NATO.
