Reproduction number in the Netherlands rises to almost 3, the highest…

In the Netherlands, the reproduction number of the coronavirus has risen to the highest level ever. It now stands at 2.91. This means that the virus is spreading very quickly. More than 11,000 infections were again registered in the past 24 hours.

The number of 2.91 means that a group of one hundred corona patients infects an average of 291 others, who in turn transmit the virus to about 847 people. They in turn infect nearly 2,500 people. Exactly a week ago the number stood at 1.37 and on Tuesday it went up to 2.17.

Between Thursday morning and Friday morning, 11,363 people were diagnosed with the corona virus in the Netherlands. It is the second day in a row that the number of positive tests exceeds 11,000. It is also the highest number since Boxing Day, nearly seven months ago.

Exactly one week ago, on July 9, there were just over 6,900 new cases. Just a week earlier, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 942 positive tests.

68,742 infections have been detected in the past seven days. That equates to an average of 9,820 per day. This also brings the Netherlands back to the level at the end of December. The number of hospital admissions has also increased again since this week, but the number of deaths remains fairly stable for the time being.

Two new deaths were registered in 24 hours.

Nearly 2 million registered infections

Since the start of the outbreak, almost 1.78 million Dutch people have tested positive for the corona virus. At the current figures, it will take two or three days before the limit of 1.8 million confirmed infections is passed. By the end of July, the limit of 2 million cases may be reached. Nearly 18,000 people are certain to have died from the virus. The actual numbers are higher.
